Harry Edgar Palacio

Obelisk

In a meadow of hoarfrost and snow my legs langured. My face was hid. A thought that life was
disappearing before me had arisen. The gnashing wind rarely abated. Pressing on the madness
came like a whorl. I spoke into the darkness, shucking open a clock to divulge death’s secret. As
though deep in the welt of oblivion someone wanted to recreate something sempiternal. Flames
rose to god’s feet from the scaffolding of pastel blue sky. Witnessing childlike folklore. To burn
like pyrite embers. Having looked below at the country town’s ruin He did shew mercy upon
them. Burying the vein of lightning over their heads. A legion of angels was sent and never
returned having fallen in love with women of war. A hot chariot orbited history and men scolded
god. But no one understood the mercy of fame strewn over a young pilgrim. A man’s calamitous
journey toward god. I watched the town grow thorns. And from atop the rooftops men plunged. I spoke about the old days of tears but all that had changed. It was the satyr’s warbling that
consumed cities. If I died, how would it be known, my life a breach into heaven. Years later
having finished the book of life, I wrote an obit. And I had been crowned with a laurel of dog
teeth. God struck down many villagers that brooded. And now I am yet another mythology. From
my temple grew ram horns. And my kiss was a pool of poisonous fruit that kept nymphs at bay.
