(I read this poem with delight and wonder; it lends itself to and transcends explorations of constraint and form within a poetic history of language, myths and the straits of politic from which it emerges. a translator, the author, Venya Gushchin is clearly an astute progenitor of signs and codes, steeped in Latinate and Cyrillic, being cross- generative, encompassing a musicality of notational space, to elicit embodied signals of transference. by means of translation, transliteration, a blur of transience, the Aubade is a morning song of leaving, a trope often investigated through 20 th century composers and even found in a variety of modern art song and pop-culture conveyances. suppose a meteorite lands by a castle or a revolution is underway. power is translucent. we see through it like a black and white photograph, a blur of delicate blooms, the scents imagined in carpeted suites of rumination and cross-border convergences. I chose, in this response, to write from within the original text, a mirror- poem, a 2 nd iteration, a boundary of leave-taking, a poem-to-poem, admired, & composed from notebooks in the spaces of personal travel_/_).
For each issue, ballast asks pairs of poets to read each other’s work and respond in some way. We hope these dialogues will sound the resonances contained within the issue as well as serve to foster a sense of interconnection and community among our authors.
